Scriptural Text: (ESV)

Gods Helper
God could not be in every place
With loving hands to help erase
The teardrops from each baby’s face,
And so He thought of mother.
He could not send us here alone
And leave us to a fate unknown;
Without providing for His own,
The outstretched arms of mother.
God could not watch us night and day
And kneel beside our crib to pray,
Or kiss our little aches away;
And so He sent us mother.
And when our childhood days began,
He simply could not take command.
That’s why He placed our tiny hand
Securely into mother’s.
The days of youth slipped quickly by,
Life’s sun rose higher in the sky.
Full grown were we, yet ever nigh
To love us still, was mother.
And when life’s span of years shall end,
I know that God will gladly send,
To welcome home her child again,
That ever-faithful mother.
—George W. Wiseman
Mother’s Day gives us an appropriate occasion to reflect upon some great mothers of the Bible.

The calling of motherhood is not an easy one, but Mary demonstrated how to be an effective parent, living a life in His favor and grace. From varied scenes in her life we can see three attributes every godly mother needs.

Models. A godly mother is a model to follow. Submissiveness to God’s will.

reveals the divine dialogue of God’s plan for this young “mother-to-be.” At first it must have been hard for Mary to understand God’s plan for her life, but she was faithful. Though she struggled to understand, she depended on God moment by moment.

Godly mothers are models who trust and who can be trusted. (, , , )

(NKJV) 20So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

(NKJV) 23Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

(NKJV) 5Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

(NKJV) 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;

Optimists. A godly mother hangs on to an optimistic attitude. Mary was expected to believe the Miraculous (Note: )

In , a wonderful scene unfolds between a mother and a son. Moms believe their kids can do anything. How true this was of Mary’s son, Jesus! The wine had run out at the wedding feast. Mary apparently had some responsibility at the wedding, so she asked her firstborn for help.

Mainstays. She was a mainstay of faith for her son, His followers and the early church. Note: and

and , Mary demonstrates one outstanding attribute—she was a mainstay of the faith. At the foot of the cross when the world had turned its back on Jesus and in the Upper Room when the world thought Jesus was dead, Mary was firm in her reliance on God. A mainstay is the supporting line extending from the mainmast of a ship. It is the chief support of the mast and crucial to the ship’s ability to set sail. This is a beautiful description of Mary. This is also a beautiful picture of all godly mothers. Without faith, it is impossible for a mother to please Him ()

Application: God expects us to believe Him and His power, regardless of circumstances and our feelings of insignificance. (, , Psalms 115:3)

(NKJV) 26But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

(NKJV) 2“I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.

(NKJV) 3But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.
3But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.
LET US CONSIDER “SIX COMMANDMENTS” TO MOTHERS:
1. Thou shalt seek God as thy heavenly Parent.
2. Thou shalt give God preference in child training.
3. Thou shalt be an example of thy teaching.
4. Thou shalt let thy children know thou lovest them.
5. Thou shalt teach thy children to be forgiving.
6. Thou shalt not dominate thy child’s married life.

COMMANDMENT WITH PROMISE: “Honor thy … mother” ().
